How to keep your dog cool in hot weather.

To overview

Your dog could use some extra help to keep him cool in hot weather and to reduce the risk of a heat stroke. How? In this blog, we give you some tips on how to prevent heat stress in dogs.

First of all, plan your walks with your dog early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day and try to select a route that includes shade.

During your walk, check the pavement/tarmac with a simple test. Touch the pavement with the back of your hand for seven seconds. If this feels too hot for you, it will be too hot for your dog as well. The pavement can quickly become very hot, and your dog could burn his paws. If pavement is too hot, walk your dog on grass or at times the pavement is cooler.

Let your dog wear a DRY® Cooling Vest during hot weather: a comfortable and easy to refill cooling vest. Simply fill the vest with water and it will cool up to 3 days. Without the use of chemicals or gels. The vest is ready within minutes and refillable up to 800 times. The cooling vest is ideal during and after a walk or whenever cooling is required.

Make sure your dog has access to fresh water throughout the day. Hot weather will increase your dog’s water needs and the risk of dehydration. If you need to travel with your dog, make sure you have access to fresh water.

Keep your dog out of the sun. Remember that dogs are also susceptible to sunburn and dogs who are often exposed to the sun are at a higher risk of developing skin cancer.

Avoid any strenuous exercise with your dog, since your dog can quickly overheat. So restrict physical exercise such as running alongside your bike, throwing balls or long walks.

Do NOT leave your dog alone in a car, also NOT in the shade, with the windows open or while wearing the DRY® Cooling Vest!

Know the signs of heat stroke and contact your veterinarian immediately if you recognize one or more of these signs!
