Size guide

1. How to measure your patient accurately

To ensure effective protection and a smooth recovery, an MPS product should fit like a second skin — not too tight, but certainly not too loose.

A size that’s too large may reduce the product’s effectiveness by allowing the animal to lick or scratch sensitive areas, and increases the risk of wound contamination from dirt or bacteria. On the other hand, a size that’s too small can cause rubbing around the legs or neck.

To help you avoid these issues, we’re here to support you in selecting the correct size for your patient. Follow the measurement guidelines below to provide the best possible post-operative care.

Protective Pet Shirt for Dogs, Cats, or Rabbits

A proper fit is key. The shirt should fit like a second skin — not too tight, but definitely not too loose.

If the fit is too loose, the animal may still be able to reach sensitive areas such as wounds, stitches, or irritated skin. Choosing the correct size helps prevent this and supports a comfortable recovery.

  • For dogs and cats: measure the back length from the neck (collar area) to the base of the tail.

  • For rabbits: size is determined based on body weight, not length.

Single and Double Front Leg Sleeves

  1. Start by measuring the chest circumference at the widest point, usually just behind the front legs.

  2. Then measure the length of the front leg on the inside — from the armpit down to the wrist.

The Protective Pet Boot

  1. Measure the length of your dog’s front or back leg on the inside — from the paw up to the armpit (front leg) or groin (hind leg). This determines the correct height of the boot.

  2. Then, measure the circumference of the paw at the widest point, around the instep (“the sole”), while the dog is standing.

The Protective Head Cover

  1. To determine the correct size, first measure the head circumference (widest part of the head).

  2. Next, measure the neck circumference where the collar normally sits.

  3. Then, measure the length from the top of the head down to the collar area.

Make sure you can fit two fingers between the measuring tape and your pet’s skin for a comfortable fit.

The DRY® Cooling Vest

  1. Start by measuring the chest, just behind the front legs at the widest part of the ribcage.

  2. Then, measure the neck circumference where the collar normally sits, leaving enough space to fit two fingers comfortably between the measuring tape and the skin.

  3. Finally, measure the length of your dog from the neck (collar area) to the base of the tail.

Hind Leg Sleeves and Top Shirt

  1. For the best fit, it’s important to measure your dog accurately. For the MPS® Protective Top Shirt, measure the chest circumference at the widest point, usually just behind the front legs.

  2. For the Hind Leg Sleeves, measure the length of the back leg on the inside — from the groin (near the belly) down to the hock.

3. Choosing the Right Size

Use the measured values together with the size chart to determine the correct fit for dogs, cats, or rabbits. A well-fitted size helps prevent complications such as access to wounds or skin irritation, and ensures effective and comfortable use of the product.

When selecting a size, also consider specific characteristics of the patient, such as:

  • A particularly slim build (e.g. greyhounds or slender cat breeds)

  • A sturdy or muscular body type (e.g. bulldogs or British Shorthairs)

  • Coat type: short- or long-haired coats can influence how snug the product feels
