Case study: Henry the dog
Henry has a lump on his thorax, in the midline between his front legs, and the lump is inflamed.
Which MPS product is suitable for wound protection?
Because the wound is on his chest, in the middle between his front legs, both the MPS Protective Pet Shirt and the MPS Protective Top Shirt are suitable. The Protective Pet Shirt covers the full torso, while the MPS Protective Top Shirt only protects the upper part of the torso.
Determine which size you need based on Henry’s measurements:
• Back length: 61 cm / 24 inches
• Chest circumference: 69 cm / 27 inches
• Leg length: 26 cm / 10 inches
When choosing the MPS Protective Pet Shirt, you need the back length to find the correct size. Looking at the size chart, you can see that Henry falls between sizes M and M+. When a dog falls between two sizes, we recommend choosing the smaller size. The shirt is made from stretchable cotton, allowing it to stretch comfortably. Henry would therefore need size M of the MPS Protective Pet Shirt.
MPS Protective Top Shirt
When choosing the MPS Protective Top Shirt, you need to measure the chest circumference. Looking at the size chart, you can see that Henry needs size M.
Case study: Coco the dog
Coco showed lameness in his right front leg. An elbow surgery was performed.
Which MPS product do you think is suitable for wound protection?
Because the wound is on one front leg, the MPS Protective Front Leg Single Sleeve is suitable. This single front leg sleeve covers and protects Coco's right front leg after elbow surgery.
Determine which size you need for the MPS Protective Front Leg Single Sleeve based on Coco’s measurements:
• Back length: 62 cm / 24.4 inches
• Chest circumference: 75 cm / 29.5 inches
• Leg length: 36 cm / 14 inches
To find the correct size for the single front leg sleeve, you need the chest circumference and front leg length. Looking at the measurements above in the size chart, you can see that Coco needs size L in the front leg sleeve.
Put the sleeve on while the dog is still under anaesthesia. This allows him to slowly get used to it while waking up. You can advise the owner to distract the dog with a toy or treats if needed.
Case study: Pedro the cat
Pedro has a wound on his right flank, and fluid is leaking from the wound. He is fitted with an MPS Protective Pet Shirt for cats.
However, Pedro is a real acrobat and manages to escape from almost anything. He also finds changes difficult and always needs a little time to adjust.
What can you do with the MPS Protective Pet Shirt to help it stay more securely in place for cats like Pedro?
There are loops on the inside of the shirt near the neck. The cat’s collar can be attached to these loops, making it more difficult for the cat to get out of the shirt.
What can you and Pedro’s owners do to help him get used to the shirt more quickly?
As a veterinary nurse, you can help Pedro getting used to the shirt by putting it on while he is still under anaesthesia or waking up from anaesthesia. You can also advise the owners to let Pedro gradually get used to the shirt at home by distracting him with a toy and/or treats. This helps him experience that he can still move, eat, drink, sleep and play normally while wearing the shirt.
