Cone of shame vs. Medical Protective Apparel

The Elizabethan collar, often referred to as the “cone of shame,” is still used after surgeries to prevent dogs, cats, and rabbits from licking or biting their wounds or stitches. In this article, we explore scientific research highlighting the welfare implications of using the cone.

Welfare implications of the cone of shame

Scientific research from the University of Sydney and University of Glasgow, in which 434 dog and cat owners participated, shows that 77.4% of the owners reported a poorer quality of life in their dogs and cats when wearing a pet cone. They indicated that their pets were hampered in their daily activities, especially in their ability to move, eat, drink and play. As a result, some owners felt their pets appeared stressed or even depressed.

Research findings

The study revealed that dogs and cats are often restricted in their movement when wearing a cone. The cone can obstruct their ability to eat and drink easily.

Moreover, the cone can impair their vision, causing them to bump into furniture, other animals, or people. This may lead to damaged objects, injuries from the cone’s sharp edges, or even fear or aggression in other animals.

Additionally, the cone may amplify sounds, causing pets to become startled or disoriented.

When a pet wears a cone, the affected area remains exposed and unprotected. Other animals or small children can easily access the wound or stitches. The wound is also more susceptible to dirt or bacteria, increasing the risk of infection.

A smart and comfortable alternative: pet recovery wear

Protective clothing offers an animal-friendly solution for post-operative care and skin problems.

At Medical Pet Shirts, we believe recovery should never come at the cost of comfort or wellbeing. That’s why we designed a pet-friendly alternative: the MPS Protective Pet Shirt.

Available in tailored versions for dogs, cats, and rabbits, each design respects the anatomy and behavior of the specific animal, ensuring maximum comfort and protection during recovery.

  • Breathable, stretchable, and gentle fabric.
