Home aftercare for dog, cat or rabbit wounds

An accident can happen in the blink of an eye, not just for us, but also for our pets. Read this blog and find out more about what you can do at home to help your pets.

Home remedies for pet wounds

Whether they’re playing indoors or exploring outside, pets can quickly end up with a minor wound. If you notice an injury, it’s important to first assess the severity. A deep cut, heavy bleeding, or signs of infection such as redness, swelling, or heat require immediate veterinary attention. But if the wound is small and superficial, you can take a few steps at home to support your pet’s recovery.

Important note(!): This guide is intended for minor wounds. Deep wounds, heavy bleeding, punctures, or signs of infection must always be treated by a veterinarian. If in doubt, don’t hesitate to ask your vet—your pet’s health is always worth it.

First things first: is it a minor wound?

Before you reach for any products or start cleaning, take a closer look. Ask yourself:

  • Is the wound bleeding heavily?

  • Is it deep or punctured?

  • Does it look infected—red, swollen, warm, or oozing?

If the answer is yes to any of these, contact your veterinarian immediately. For minor surface wounds, home aftercare is often enough, but it needs to be done with care.

How to clean your pet’s wound at home:

Gently rinse the wound with a pet-safe saline solution or lukewarm water.
Avoid alcohol, iodine or hydrogen peroxide. These irritate healthy tissue.
Pat the area dry with a clean cloth. Try not to rub or disturb the wound too much.

Different products support different types of wounds. A shirt is perfect after abdominal surgery, skin issues, or spaying/neutering. A leg sleeve helps with paw injuries, hotspots or lick granulomas. For head or ear wounds, the head cover offers both protection and comfort. Every product is developed together with veterinarians. That means every detail, from fabric choice to fit, is focused on pet wellbeing. With MPS, you support:

  • Faster healing

  • Less stress and frustration

  • Comfort for both pet and owner

  • A safer alternative to cones, bandages or DIY solutions

Stay alert during recovery

Wounds can change quickly, and it’s important to monitor the area daily. Watch for:

  • Swelling or redness

  • Bad odor or oozing

  • Your pet showing more interest in the wound

Clean any MPS protective wear regularly with mild detergent and let it air dry. Having a second item ready can be helpful, especially for long-term recovery.
